MPO puts in place special security measures for investment summit

Kathmandu, March 28

Metropolitan Police Office has made special security arrangements for Nepal Investment Summit which is scheduled to begin in Kathmandu tomorrow.

The federal capital of Nepal was put on a high alert to prevent any untoward incident in the wake of mounting security concern amid tension between the government and the Netra Bikram Chand-led Communist Party of Nepal. “Guests from different countries have started coming to Kathmandu to attend the summit and we are very cautious about their security. Police are  maintaining a hawk-eyed vigil throughout the capital with special focus the designated route linking Tribhuvan International Airport and summit venue and hotels,” Senior Superintendent of Police Shyam Lal Gyawali, MPO spokesperson, told The Himalayan Times. The guests will stay in 22 hotels of Kathmandu and Lalitpur during the two-day summit.

He informed that over 4,200 additional cops, in addition to personnel from Armed Police Force and National Investigation Department had fanned out across the capital in accordance with a special security plan. Heightened security measures will remain in place for at least three days. “Elaborate security arrangements have been put in place  “Though  no security threat has been reported in connection with the summit, we have taken up several tiers of security measures to ensure peace, and law and order,” SSP Gyawali said.  The special security was prepared on the basis of risk assessment and threat analysis by police.

Similarly, Metropolitan Police Range has set up pickets in 109 places of Kathmandu besides mobilising mobile and foot patrol teams. A police official said security agency had taken the Chand-led CPN as a major threat and acted accordingly, despite it called off Nepal bandh previously announced for Saturday. “The move to withdraw the general strike has helped us to focus on security measures for the summit,” he said.

Meanwhile, SSP Gyawali said there was no plan to clear the traffic for the movement of foreign guests, representatives and dignitaries like before.
