Samples collected for second time from quarantined Nepalis

Kathmandu, February 29

Nasal and throat swabs were collected for the second time from 175 Nepalis evacuated from China, currently quarantined at Nepal Electricity Authority Training Centre, Kharipati, today.

Samples were also collected from 18 persons — crew members and others who had gone to China to evacuate Nepalis. They are quarantined at National Water Supply and Sanitation Training Centre, Nagarkot.

“The samples have been brought to National Public Health Laboratory. The test reports will be given on Tuesday,” said Dr Runa Jha, director at NPHL. “Those under quarantine will be sent home if they test negative. If any of them have fever or respiratory problems they won’t be sent home,” Dr Jha added.

The government had airlifted 134 males and 41 females from Wuhan, Enshi, Shiyan, Yichang, Jingmen and Jingzhou of China on February 15. A chartered flight of Nepal Airlines had flown to Wuhan Tianhe International Airport to bring the Nepalis back home.

The first round of samples was collected on February 16. All the evacuees had tested negative for coronavirus.

The Ministry of Health and Population has said surveillance would be strengthened in Kathmandu, Pokhara, Chitwan and Lumbini. “These cities are tourist hubs and there is high risk of infection. We are working on strengthening the surveillance system in these cities,” said Dr Bikash Devkota, spokesperson for the health ministry.

“Surveillance must be done properly if we are to prevent coronavirus transmission. Daily reporting from hospitals and updated record keeping are necessary,” said an official on the condition of anonymity.

The ministry today sent a team of doctors to Tatopani and Rasuwagadi borders as these areas didn’t have doctors.

After many complaints, the Ministry of Health and Population today provided three infrared thermometers to measure body temperature of people entering Nepal from Tribhuvan International Airport. There are now six infrared thermometers at TIA.

However, the thermal scanner at TIA, which stopped working a few weeks ago, has not been repaired. “Decisions have been taken to maintain and purchase three more thermal scanners. It will take a week’s time,” said Dr Devkota.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli today formed a high level committee to prevent and control the spread of covid-19. A meeting held today formed the committee with Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence Ishwor Pokhrel as co-ordinator.

The World Health Organisation said that some countries had not reported any case, but it didn’t mean those countries wouldn’t have cases of coronavirus.

Kylian Mbappe capped a brilliant individual performance by scoring twice and creating another for Mauro Icardi as leaders Paris St Germain cruised to a comfortable 4-0 victory over Dijon in their Ligue 1 clash at the Parc des Princes on Saturday.

With Neymar and Marco Veratti suspended and Thiago Silva missing with injury, PSG got off to the perfect start when midfielder Pablo Sarabia steered a mis-hit shot from Marquinhos past Runar Runarsson in the third minute to give them the lead.

Mbappe added a second in the 74th minute, timing his run perfectly to collect Julian Draxler’s through ball before rounding Runarsson and slotting the ball through the arms of the diving goalkeeper.

He then set up Icardi for PSG’s third three minutes later, sliding a perfectly-weighted pass into the path of the Argentinian striker for him to fire the ball home.

The 21-year-old completed his attacking masterclass with a second goal in stoppage time at the end of the game, rifling the ball past the helpless Runarsson to complete the 4-0 rout.

The win took PSG to 68 points from 27 games and restored their lead at the top of the table to 13 following second-placed Olympique de Marseille’s 3-2 win over Nimes on Friday night. Dijon remain just above the relegation places with 27 points.

In the late kickoffs, Teji Savanier scored twice for Montpellier as they thumped Strasbourg 3-0 and Angers put some daylight between themselves and the relegation zone with a 1-0 win away to Brest.

No MCC deal sans revision, says Dahal

Co-chair of the ruling Nepal Communist Party (NCP) Pushpa Kamal Dahal today told mediapersons in Sindhupalchowk that if the United States did not agree to revise the Millennium Challenge Corporation programme, Nepal would not endorse it.

Dahal said MCC could be endorsed only as per the recommendations made by the NCP taskforce led by Jhalanath Khanal.

Dahal’s statement comes at a time when Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, who has fallen in minority in the nine-member Secretariat, is trying to pass the MCC agreement with or without revision.

However, other party leaders, including Dahal, Khanal, Bhim Rawal and some for mer CPN-Maoist leaders are for endorsing the MCC only after revising it.

Those NCP leaders who want revision in the MCC say the agreement cannot be adopted in its present form because it undermines Nepal’s sovereignty and independence.

Speaking to journalists at Sikute, Sindhupalchowk, Dahal said he was not in favour of compromising national interest in the name of 500 million dollars US grant.

Stating that Nepal enjoyed cordial ties with the US, Dahal said a request would be made, along with some suggestions for revising the MCC agreement. “If the US does not agree to revise the MCC agreement, it won’t be endorsed,” he added.

US officials have, however, said there is no possibility of revising the MCC.

The government had registered the MCC agreement at the Parliament Secretariat in the last session of the Parliament, but it could not be endorsed as former speaker Krishna Bahadur Mahara did not forward the process, drawing Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli’s ire.

PM Oli had said in a newspaper interview that Mahara erred by not moving the MCC process ahead in the House of Representatives.

Meanwhile, NCP leader Jhalanath Khanal, who had submitted his taskforce report to the party saying the MCC should not be endorsed in its present form, also said today in Nuwakot that MCC should not be endorsed without revision. The day he submitted the report to the party, he told THT that the MCC agreement undermined Nepal’s sovereignty and independence.

SEOUL: South Korea reported 376 new confirmed coronavirus cases on Sunday, raising the country’s total number of infections to 3,526, the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC) said.

Sunday’s new cases follow the 813 infections recorded on Saturday, the biggest daily jump in South Korea, which is grappling with the largest outbreak of the virus outside China. KCDC said it will update numbers later in the day.

The death toll stood at 17, unchanged from the day earlier, KCDC said.

Of the new cases, 333 were from the southeastern city of Daegu, the location of a church at the centre of the outbreak, and 26 from the nearby province of North Gyeongsang, KCDC said.

Health authorities have urged South Koreans to refrain from attending religious services and political events and stay indoors this weekend, warning of a “critical moment” in the country’s battle against the virus.

LONDON: Liverpool’s dream run was demolished in the most unlikely fashion by strugglers Watford on Saturday in what must be considered the most extraordinary reverse of the entire Premier League season.

On the evening when the European champions were expected to complete the best sequence in the history of English football’s top-flight with a 19th straight league victory, they were instead hammered 3-0 by the team lying one from bottom.

Earlier Chelsea earned a late draw 2-2 at Bournemouth with two goals from their predatory defender Marcos Alonso and West Ham United moved out of the drop zone with a 3-1 win over Southampton after protests outside the London Stadium.

Yet nothing could compare with the drama of the late match as Watford’s Senegalese winger Ismaila Sarr scored twice and set up a third for his captain Troy Deeney in a second-half shredding of Liverpool’s aura of domestic invincibility.

Liverpool’s first league defeat in their 28th match this season also meant the end of a 44-game unbeaten streak stretching back to January 2019, as well as killing off their dreams of going an entire English top-flight campaign without a loss like Arsenal and Preston North End before them.

They remain 22 points clear of City, who have a game in hand, so it will doubtless prove only a bump en route to Liverpool’s first English title for 30 years yet such has been the Reds’ supremacy this term, it felt more than a minor tremor.

Sarr, who pounced twice in the space of six minutes just before the hour, was hailed an “unbelievable talent” by Deeney, who could not help but smile about a victory “nobody had given us a prayer” to achieve.

Liverpool’s captain Virgil van Dijk told Sky Sports the defeat was “unacceptable”, adding: “If you concede three goals, obviously we have to improve as a team. We will.”

The thoroughly deserved win saw Nigel Pearson’s Watford move out of the bottom three on goal difference into 17th place on 27 points, the same as 16th-placed West Ham and Bournemouth, who slipped into the drop zone after Chelsea’s late equaliser.

At the Vitality Stadium, Chelsea boss Frank Lampard was relieved, but still a little alarmed to be left reliant on defender Alonso coming to the rescue.

“I don’t want my left-back top of the scoring charts. I want our attackers scoring goals and they haven’t,” said Lampard, after watching Alonso head home five minutes from time to ensure Chelsea avoided a second defeat in five days following their humbling Champions League home loss to Bayern Munich.

Chelsea’s hopes of being in Europe’s top tournament next season suffered another setback after Bournemouth responded to Alonso’s first-half goal with two in three second-half minutes from Jefferson Lerma and Josh King.

Yet Alonso, who also scored in the Blues’ big win over Tottenham Hotspur last weekend, struck to ensure fourth-placed Chelsea at least moved to 45 points, five behind third-placed Leicester City.

At West Ham, a few thousand Hammers’ fans marched before the game, protesting about the club’s owners, but their mood was lightened as Jarrod Bowen, the 22 million-pound ($28 million) January signing, marked his full debut with a fine goal.

Southampton teenager Michael Obafemi equalised but the Hammers prevailed with goals from Sebastien Haller and Michail Antonio.

Brighton & Hove Albion are still in a precarious 15th position as former England manager Roy Hodgson celebrated his 100th Premier League match in charge of Crystal Palace with a 1-0 win at the home of their old rivals.

Jordan Ayew’s 70th-minute winner, conjured up against the run of play, left Brighton pondering serious difficulties as they face a daunting fixture list for the rest of the season.

Newcastle United could get sucked into the relegation zone too if their strike force remains as blunt as it did in the 0-0 draw at home to Burnley, the fourth successive game in which they have failed to score.

Police inspector mercilessly beats up woman

Nepal Police is back in news for all the wrong reasons: mercilessly beating up a young woman, her toddler wrapped in her arms, and marshalling her out of a posh residence at Bhaisepati on Thursday afternoon. As if that was not enough, the police then kept the woman and her toddler in detention at the Metropolitan Police Range all day.

According to a video that went viral on social media today, the young woman is Hima Shrestha. The 34-year-old had her 10-month-old baby locked in her arms when the police batons rained on her. The police officer in uniform is Inspector Devi Prasad Paudel from Metropolitan Police Range, Jawalakhel.

Paudel mercilessly thrashed Hima with a baton and then kept her in custody for six hours or so at the police range before releasing her after office hours later in the evening.

“It hurt all day and I requested for my medical check-up. But they didn’t take me to hospital,” Shrestha said, showing bruise marks on both her legs.

The woman suffered bruises on her thighs and calves inflicted by the police beating.

“Just as I stepped out of the police station, I took a cab and headed for Green City Hospital in Basundhara for a medical check-up,” she told THT.

Shrestha said she was thrashed for being a part of the group that was protesting against a senior army officer who had abandoned a woman with who he had a relationship with for 17 years.

Shrestha and a group of women had reached the army officer’s residence at Bhaisepati on Thursday afternoon to broker talks between him and his long time concubine. The officer allegedly had an extramarital relationship with the woman for 17 years. According to Shrestha, the army officer had lied to the woman that he was unmarried.

“The army officer had been supporting her for 17 years, but stopped visiting her six months ago,” said Shrestha. “We had gone to his residence to discuss the issue so that the woman wouldn’t have to suffer.”

“We wanted to talk with the officer and his family, but they called the police. Just as the police reached the house they started beating the woman’s supporters on charge of trespassing,” said Shrestha, alleging, “I was mercilessly hit at least eight times by the police inspector. Even my 10-month-old son was not spared.”

The video of the incident has drawn ire of rights activists and the public.

A press release issued by the police said that four women were taken into custody for trespassing and vandalising officer’s property.

Oli-Dahal tug of war continues

The tug of war between Nepal Communist Party (NCP) co-chairs KP Sharma Oli and Pushpa Kamal Dahal over who to nominate to the National Assembly that appeared to head towards rapprochement after last evening’s joint address by the top brass of the party is far from over.

The fresh dispute ensued after Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli rejected a unanimous decision taken by the NCP Secretariat on Wednesday to nominate Bamdev Gautam to the Upper House after Finance Minister Yubaraj Khatiwada’s two-year tenure as NA member ends on March 3.

The recommendation — proposed by Dahal and endorsed by Madhav Kumar Nepal, Jhalanath Khanal and Narayan Kaji Shrestha — didn’t go well with Oli, who has fallen in minority in the nine-member Secretariat. Only General Secretary Bishnu Paudel and Defence Minister Ishwar Pokharel are on Oli’s side. He suspected a ploy against him by his party’s top leaders in collusion with some businessmen.

Oli is of the view that businessmen unhappy with Khatiwada’s policies had influenced the Dahal camp to oust Khatiwada. But Oli has conveyed to leaders close to him, as well as some opposition leaders, that he will not allow Gautam to replace Khatiwada.

The Dahal camp, meanwhile, has gone from strength to strength ever since their meeting at Gautam’s Bhaisepati residence in early January that culminated in Dahal’s favourite Agni Prasad Sapkota’s appointment as the speaker of the House of Representatives. It was that meeting that pressured Oli to back down from his stance to appoint Subas Chandra Nembang as the HoR leader and put him in minority in the Secretariat.

Subsequent Secretariat decisions, such as those related to Millennium Challenge Corporation Compact Programme and resignation of Oli’s confidant Gokul Baskota as the minister of communications and information technology, also were against Oli’s wishes.

However, Oli has resolved not to give in to pressure from his fellow leaders this time. He has argued that recommending an NA member is the prime minister’s prerogative. Oli has reportedly told his party and opposition leaders that he will not hesitate to take harsh decisions if he is continued to be cornered.

Oli’s Adviser Rajan Bhattarai said at a programme today that the party could just advise the prime minister about NA nominations, but it was up to the prime minister and the president who to nominate.

As Oli seemed adamant, Dahal, Nepal and Khanal met this morning at Dahal’s Khumaltar residence to find a middle ground and amicably resolve the dispute, which insiders say has the potential to push the party to the brink of split.

According to insiders, the Khumaltar meeting concluded that Gautam could be nominated to the NA and Khatiwada could continue as the finance minister. As per the constitutional provision, the prime minister can appoint anybody as a minister, but the incumbent has to win membership of one of the two houses of Parliament within six months of appointment. “Therefore, Khatiwada can again be brought back to Parliament after six months,” said an NCP leader.

Dahal, who visited Chitwan right after Khumaltar meeting, also spoke in the same spirit. “The Secretariat unanimously decided to nominate Gautam to the NA. Therefore, the PM will respect the decision,” Dahal told mediapersons. “As far as Khatiwada is concerned, he can continue as finance minister for the next six months. It is up to the prime minister to re-appoint him.”

Madhav Kumar Nepal is also believed to have conveyed the same to the PM today. Oli, who is making a bid to win over Nepal, had invited the latter to Baluwatar after the Khumaltar meet.

New coronavirus cases in mainland China fall to lowest since January

BEIJING: Mainland China had 327 new confirmed cases of coronavirus infections on Thursday, the country’s National Health Commission said on Friday, down from 433 cases a day earlier and the lowest since January 23.

That brings the total accumulated number of confirmed cases in mainland China so far to 78,824.

China’s central Hubei province, the epicentre of the outbreak, had 318 new confirmed cases, down from 409 cases a day earlier and the lowest since Jan. 24.

Excluding Hubei, mainland China reported just nine new cases on Thursday, down from 24 a day earlier.

The provincial capital of Wuhan reported 313 confirmed cases, down from 383 a day earlier and the lowest since Jan. 26.

The death toll in mainland China reached 2,788 as of the end of Thursday, up by 44 from the previous day.

Hubei reported 41 new deaths on Thursday, while in Wuhan, 28 people died.

Arsenal suffered a shock Europa League exit to Olympiakos Piraeus on away goals after a 2-1 extra-time home defeat, while Manchester United and Wolverhampton Wanderers cruised into the last 16 with emphatic aggregate wins on Thursday.

The North London club were among several heavyweights who slumped out as the Portuguese trio of Benfica, Sporting and Porto as well as Ajax Amsterdam and Celtic were also eliminated from Europe’s second-tier competition in the Round of 32.

Arsenal had beaten Olympiakos 1-0 in the first leg and appeared to have done enough to squeeze through when Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang struck in the 113th minute to cancel out Pape Cisse’s 53rd-minute header which levelled the tie on aggregate.

But the visitors had the last laugh as Youssef El Arabi struck seven minutes later to delight the noisy contingent of away fans, with Aubameyang missing a gilt-edged chance to force another twist with the last kick of the game.

Manchester United breezed to a 6-1 aggregate win over 10-man Bruges after a 5-0 return-leg rout of the Belgians at Old Trafford, while Wolves advanced with a 6-3 overall victory against Espanyol despite a 3-2 second-leg defeat in Spain.

New loan signing Odion Ighalo celebrated his first start for United with his maiden goal for the club after Bruno Fernandes had fired the home side ahead with a 27th-minute penalty which also produced a red card for Bruges defender Simon Deli.

The centre back was dismissed after he dived in goalkeeping fashion to handle a Daniel James shot before Fernandes sent Simon Mignolet the wrong way with the spot-kick.

Scot McTominay made it 3-0 on the night with a fine first-time shot from 18 metres just before the break and Brazilian midfielder Fred put the icing on the cake with a late brace for United, who won Europe’s second-tier competition in 2016.

Leverkusen blew Porto away with a 3-1 win on the road, after taking a 2-1 lead in Germany last week, thanks to goals from Lucas Alario, Kerem Demirbay and Kai Havertz before Moussa Marega netted a consolation for the home side.

Sporting exited after losing 4-1 at Istanbul Basaksehir following extra time to go down 5-4 on aggregate after Edin Visca gave the hosts a lifeline with a late goal in normal time and then netted a penalty to take them through.

Shakhtar Donetsk edged Benfica 5-4 on aggregate after a thrilling 3-3 draw in Lisbon, while Ajax endured a bittersweet 2-1 home win over Getafe which meant a 3-2 aggregate defeat against the Spanish side.

Celtic could not capitalise on a 1-1 first-leg draw at FC Copenhagen as they suffered a 3-1 home defeat, while Inter Milan strolled to a 2-1 home win over Bulgarians Ludogorets Razgrad to complete a 4-1 aggregate victory.

The match at the San Siro stadium was played behind closed doors as the authorities try to contain the coronavirus that has made northern Italy the focal point of the outbreak in Europe.

AS Roma, 1-0 winners against Gent in the first leg, looked to face a struggle when Jonathan David levelled the tie on aggregate after 25 minutes but Justin Kluivert eased the Serie A side’s nerves with a quick equaliser as they progressed.

Vfl Wolfsburg beat Swedish side Malmo 3-0 away to breeze through 5-1 on aggregate and FC Basel also advanced with a 1-0 home win over APOEL Nicosia for a 4-0 aggregate success.

Govt raises infra tax on fuel by Rs 5 a litre

Kathmandu, February 27

Despite its inability to spend over Rs 40 billion collected in infrastructure tax for development of the country’s infrastructure as envisaged earlier, the government has raised the tax levied on the sale of petroleum products by five rupees a litre.

Finance Minister Yubaraj Khatiwada, who is also the spokesperson for the government, said a recent Cabinet meeting had decided to raise the infrastructure tax on fuel (petrol, diesel, kerosene and aviation turbine fuel) by five rupees per litre to Rs 10 a litre.

“The decision intends to accumulate resources for the development of infrastructure projects,” he added.

The government has been collecting five rupees per litre as infrastructure tax on fuel since May 2016. The tax was meant for developing the 1,200-megawatt hydropower project on the Budhi Gandaki River that flows between Gorkha and Dhading districts.

Since then more than Rs 40 billion has been collected as infrastructure tax from fuel, as per NOC. However, the development of Budhi Gandaki Hydropower Project has not progressed so far, as the project is yet to complete the process of compensating owners of the acquired land.

Consumer rights activists condemned the decision to raise tax on fuel saying that it would add financial burden on consumers.

“Nepal Oil Corporation will ultimately pass this financial burden to consumers who are already hit by excessive inflation on both food and non-food items,” said Prem Lal Maharjan, president of National Consumer Forum.

Meanwhile, higher fuel prices will not only hit consumers but also the economy at large, as rise in fuel prices also means rise in transportation costs.

Higher transportation costs will make goods costlier and raise inflation.

According to Nepal Rastra Bank, the consumer price inflation stood at 6.82 per cent in mid-January, surpassing the government’s target to keep inflation below six per cent in the ongoing fiscal.

However, NOC officials said the decision to raise infrastructure tax on fuel was taken with the consent of NOC and that the raised tax amount would not affect the retail price of petroleum products.

“The additional tax burden will not be transferred to consumers and will be adjusted from NOC’s profit,” said Sushil Bhattarai, deputy managing director of the oil corporation.

According to him, the corporation has been booking a profit of more than five rupees per litre on the sale of petrol, diesel, kerosene and aviation turbine fuel.

Sluggish Juventus slump to surprise defeat at Lyon

LYON: Juventus’s hopes of reaching the Champions League last eight suffered a blow when the two-times European Cup winners slumped to a 1-0 defeat in their last-16 first leg at Olympique Lyonnais on Wednesday.

Midfielder Lucas Tousart scored the only goal in the opening half to give Lyon, who are bidding to reach the quarter-finals for the first time since 2010, a deserved win.

It was Lyon’s first victory over Juventus, who suffered their first defeat in the competition this season.

Serie A leaders Juventus lacked quality, with Cristiano Ronaldo rarely getting into scoring positions, and they will need to improve in the return leg on March 17 if they are to progress.

About 2,700 Juventus fans travelled from Piedmont, a region neighbouring the coronavirus-hit Lombardy, as the game went ahead as planned despite concern over the virus.

On the pitch, Lyon were at their best, with Houssem Aouar and new signing Bruno Guimaraes inspiring their team.

“We were not the favourites and rightfully so, but we believed that we could unsettle Juventus,” said midfielder Aouar.

“But let’s not get carried away, there’s one full game left.”

Juventus have only won four of their last eight competitive matches and captain Leonardo Bonucci pointed out that the team had improved.

“We messed up our first half, sometimes it happens,” he said. “We gifted one half and they scored at a moment when they were good at hurting us.”

After a cagey start, Lyon made a clear chance when Karl Toko-Ekambi’s header at the near post from Houssem Aouar’s corner hit the crossbar.

Aouar then burst into the area and delivered a cutback that Tousart placed into the top corner from close range to put the French side ahead after 31 minutes.

Juve were at the time down to 10 men as Mathias De Ligt was getting treatment for blood on his head after being accidentally stamped on by team mate Alex Sandro.

The visitors threatened through Ronaldo but the Portuguese shot just wide at the end of a counter-attack as Juve looked short on confidence.

The Italian side increased the pressure after the interval as Lyon tried to sit back and hope to hurt Maurizio Sarri’s team on the break.

Paulo Dybala went close for Juve with a volley, substitute Gonzalo Higuain wasted a couple of chances and Dybala had a goal ruled out for offside as Lyon held firm.

De Bruyne leads remarkable Man City comeback win in Madrid

MADRID: Manchester City finally produced a Champions League performance worthy of their status as one of European football’s elite clubs by beating Real Madrid 2-1 away in Wednesday’s last-16 first leg after pulling off a stunning late fightback.

Kevin De Bruyne kept his cool to beat Belgium team mate Thibaut Courtois from the penalty spot in the 82nd minute to give City the lead after Gabriel Jesus had headed home a cross from De Bruyne to pull the visitors level in the 78th minute.

Isco had given Real the lead on the hour mark following a sweeping counterattack but the 13-times European champions’ night soon unravelled, culminating in captain Sergio Ramos being sent off for hauling down Jesus in a bid to prevent a third City goal.

City coach Pep Guardiola, who has not gone past the quarter-final in his three previous seasons with the club, was delighted with how his side turned the match around but also said the tie was still wide open.

“Winning in the Bernabeu gives us great satisfaction, it’s incredible for us and not something this club is used to. I’m very pleased with the result and the performance, we showed great personality,” he said before sounding a note of caution.

“If there is one club who was capable of turning a tie around it is Real Madrid, they have the history and experience in this competition to do it.”

Ramos will be suspended for the second leg at the Etihad Stadium on March 17 while City’s influential defender Aymeric Laporte was forced off injured in the first half, another setback in a season marked by fitness troubles.

City went into the match with a two-year ban from European competition hanging around their necks for defying UEFA’s rules on financial fair play although the club submitted an appeal against the sanction earlier this week.

GLEEFUL CITY FANS

The visiting supporters chanted against Europe’s organising body throughout the game and after they had completed their comeback the sanction had become a badge of pride for the gleeful fans.

Guardiola opted to leave his top scorers Raheem Sterling and Sergio Aguero out of the starting lineup despite them getting a combined 40 goals in all competitions this season.

Yet he turned to Sterling in the second half and the England forward earned the penalty from which De Bruyne snatched the winner, drawing a foul from Real’s Dani Carvajal.

Bourse rides on FinMin exit rumour

Kathmandu, February 26

The spring season seems to have come early in the share market, with all the subgroups landing in the green and the daily turnover crossing an eye-popping Rs 4 billion for the first time.

The country’s sole secondary market saw an unprecedented buying pressure today on the rumours doing the rounds that Finance Minister Yubaraj Khatiwada will soon be replaced, as his National Assembly membership expires on March 3. Khatiwada is widely considered as not being market-friendly.

Soaring by 3.30 per cent or 50.93 points today, Nepal Stock Exchange (Nepse) index closed at 1,596.13 points. The sensitive index rose by 2.91 per cent or 9.49 points to 336.05 points and float index went up by 3.12 per cent or 3.41 points to 112.70 points. Altogether 9.91 million shares of 180 companies were traded through 32,154 transactions today that amounted to Rs 4.15 billion.

“Share investors, especially large investors, had been curbing their investment in the local bourse as they were wary of the policies that Khatiwada had introduced in the name of regulating the market,” explained Uttam Aryal, chairperson of Investors Association of Nepal.

According to him, Nepse is likely to set new records in the coming days if the news of a new finance minister being appointed soon is confirmed.

While all the sub-indices rose today, the share value of companies listed under life insurance, manufacturing, banking and hotels subgroups surged notably. Three companies faced circuit breakers as their share price soared by 10 per cent — the upper limit of growth for a single day.

The life insurance subgroup was the highest gainer, surging by 6.12 per cent or 571.18 points to land at 9,905.94 points. Manufacturing sub-index ascended by 4.63 per cent or 142.8 points to 3,226.7 points.

Banking  — the subgroup with the highest weightage in the secondary market — jumped by 3.86 per cent or 50.47 points to 1,356.86 points.

Hotels subgroup advanced by 3.77 per cent or 73.88 points to 2,035.40 points; mutual funds sub-index went up by 3.2 per cent or 0.34 points to 10.93 points and non-life insurance subgroup expanded by 3.18 per cent or 233.51 points to 7,568.55 points.

Other subgroup went up by 2.18 per cent or 17.5 points to 821.95 points and development banks rose by 1.54 per cent or 30.66 points to 2,025.05 points.

The gain of the microfinance, finance, hydropower and trading sub-indices was below one per cent.

Share value of Everest Bank Ltd Convertible Preference, Rastriya Beema Company and Unilever Nepal soared by 10 per cent to Rs 671, Rs 12,431 and Rs 21,596, respectively.

Share price of Kalika Power Co went up by 9.91 per cent to Rs 122, Gurans Life Insurance Company by 9.73 per cent to Rs 1,026. Rastriya Beema Company Ltd (Promoter Share) went up by 9.64 per cent to 11,013, Civil Laghubitta Bittiya Sanstha ascended by 9.47 per cent to 1,387 and Joshi Hydropower went up by 9.38 per cent
to Rs 70.

Among the top losers, Radhi Bidyut’s share price dropped by 8.29 per cent to Rs 188 and Arun Valley Hydro went down by 7.96 per cent to Rs 104.
