Deported US citizen recalls TIA ordeal

Kathmandu, June 30

Penpa Tsering, who was deported to the US from Tribhuvan International Airport on suspicion of being an agent of exiled Tibetan leader the Dalai Lama, says that he still feels traumatised by the June 22 incident.

In an email interview with THT today, the 53-year-old Nepal-born American national said the incident left him feeling shocked, helpless and traumatised.

On June 22, he approached immigration desk at TIA for entry visa, but to his shock, when officials were scanning his passport a letter from China popped up on the computer screen, instead of his details, he recounted. “The letter contained Chinese characters at the top with some English characters below. The immigration official then asked me whether I was the speaker of Tibetan Parliament-in-exile. I said, ‘No,’ and wondered why the officer was asking that.

“The officer then told me about the letter from China. I told him that I was not the Penpa Tsering they were looking for,” he told THT.

At the same time a number of immigration officials came to have a look at him and gave him suspicious looks, he said. “Then two cops in civvies came and started asking me questions in a very rude manner as if I was a criminal. I suspect they were doing so because of my Tibetan origin,” he added.

Officials also snatched his mobile phone to prevent him from making any calls.

“When I tried to stand up to stretch and move a couple a steps to release my tension, they didn’t even let me do that,” he added.

As if that was not enough, he was told to buy a return ticket to the US. “I was shocked to learn that I was being deported. I was frightened and feeling harassed,” he said, “I paid for my return ticket but authorities later claimed that I was deported at Nepal government’s expense.”

Penpa had planned to be in Nepal for five days before moving to India to spend the remainder of his month-long vacation. In Nepal, he was to visit Buddhist places and meet relatives, he said.

Penpa blamed his ordeal on China and Nepali immigration officers who acted on behalf of China. “I felt sorry for the Nepali people because Nepal seemed to be under China’s control like Tibet. Moreover, one can easily assume how innocent Tibetans are suffering under China’s occupation.”

Penpa said he would suggest that other Tibetans by the name of Penpa Tsering should think twice before going to Nepal. “Check with the Nepali embassy in your country so that you won’t get deported from airport in Nepal.” According to Penpa, his family immigrated to America in 2007 in a family reunion programme. He is now settled in New Mexico, has a family and often longs to visit relatives and friends in India and Nepal.

The US Embassy in Kathmandu has already sought clarification from the government regarding Penpa’s deportation.

10 dead in Dallas-area small plane crash: Official

DALLAS: Ten people were killed when a small airplane crashed into a hangar as it was taking off from a Dallas-area airport Sunday morning, a spokeswoman for the town of Addison, Texas, said.

Mary Rosenbleeth said no one aboard the twin-engine plane survived at the Addison Municipal Airport, about 20 miles (32 kilometers) north of Dallas.

Texas plane crash

The Beechcraft BE-350 King Air hit an unoccupied hangar soon after 9 a.m., according to the Federal Aviation Administration. The agency said that the blaze destroyed the plane but could not confirm how many people were aboard Sunday evening. Video showed black smoke billowing from the building and a gaping hole in the hangar.

Officials have not released the identities of the people who died. Rosenbleeth said the Dallas County medical examiner’s office confirmed the fatalities to the town and that authorities are still working to notify the families of the victims.

An official with the medical examiner’s office told The Associated Press they could not release any information on the crash Sunday evening.

The plane crashed during takeoff and the resulting fire was quickly extinguished, said Edward Martelle, a spokesman for the town immediately north of Dallas.

Dallas County was helping the city of Addison set up a family assistance center for people affected by the crash, Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins said.

“It’s a very sad day for Dallas County,” he told the Dallas Morning News . “My prayers are with the families we’re notifying about this tragedy.”

Addison fire spokesman Edward Martelle said the plane was taking off at the south end of the airport and had just lifted off the runway when it veered left, dropped its left wing and went into the hangar.

The fire department had extinguished the fire and all hot spots at the hangar by early afternoon.

FAA and National Transportation Safety Board officials were at the crash site Sunday evening. Martelle said NTSB will be leading the investigation and that they intend to work into the night.

The plane’s tail number and details from the flight manifest have not yet been released.

All parties should be one on foreign policy: PM Oli

Kathmandu, June 29

Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli said he was confident that the report of the Nepal-India Eminent Persons Group, which was ready, would be submitted to both governments soon.

Inaugurating an interaction on ‘national dialogue on foreign policy’ organised by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs here today, PM Oli said once the report was submitted, it would be discussed between the two countries and implemented.

PM Oli said all political parties and individuals of the country should be one on foreign policy issues.

He said Nepal’s relations with neighbours had deepened in recent years. “As far as our relations with other countries are concerned, we have reviewed many aspects. Our relations with our neighbours should be grounded on truth, justice and the world system,” he said and added that Nepal’s objective was to maintain friendly relations with all countries with enmity towards none.

“We are pursuing our foreign policies to spur development in all fields and I am confident that we will be able to lift our country out of poverty soon,” he said and added that the government needed to focus on economic diplomacy, not just on political diplomacy.

The PM said there should not be extra activism in diplomacy.

He further said that his government would take positive initiatives to hold the next SAARC Summit.

“I recognise the roles of those people who contributed to nation-building, unification of the country and protection of sovereignty,” the PM added.

Co-chair of Nepal Communist Party (NCP) Pushpa Kamal Dahal said that in the past, governments tended to favour a particular country, but that should end now and the government should pursue only pro-Nepal policy.

He also said that Nepal’s relations with India and China stood on their own merits and there should not be any tendency to play one neighbour against another.

He further added that all the parties which joined hands together to promulgate the new constitution should work in the same spirit now to develop the country’s common foreign policies.

Minister of Foreign Affairs Pradeep Kumar Gyawali said foreign policies were the extended form of a country’s domestic policies. He said the government was pursuing its foreign policies to protect and promote national interest. He added that Nepal’s relations were continuously growing with the countries of the world. “Given our geopolitics, we need to handle our foreign relations carefully,” he said and added that the government was sensitive about the sensitivities of neighbours.

Deputy Prime Minister and Health and Population Minister Upendra Yadav said SAARC was established with high hopes and expectations, but now it was not moving ahead due to some issues between some counties.

He also said that Nepal should play its role to promote understanding within the SAARC so that its activities could be put back on track.

Co-general Secretary of Nepali Congress Prakash Sharan Mahat said the government’s foreign policies had deviated in recent months, but the government should pursue the country’s foreign policies keeping national interests at the centre.

Rastriya Janata Party-Nepal leader Rajkishor Yadav said Nepal’s foreign policies should focus on economic diplomacy so that the country could gain economic benefits. He also said the Madhes region, which shares a long border with India, should not be overlooked in our dialogue with India on foreign policy issues.

Sweden upset Germany to reach World Cup semis

RENNES: Sweden ended Germany’s hopes of a third women’s World Cup win, coming from behind for a surprise 2-1 quarter-final victory on Saturday thanks to goals from Sofia Jakobsson and Stina Blackstenius.

The Swedes now face a last-four clash with the Netherlands in Lyon on Wednesday after a win which means Olympic champions Germany will not have a chance to defend their title in Tokyo next year.

It was sweet revenge for the Swedes, who had lost the Olympic final to the Germans 2-1 in Rio de Janeiro in 2016 but who have now booked a place at their old rivals’ expense in the 2020 Games.

Many will still look to the other semi-final, Tuesday’s clash between England and the United States, for the likely winner of the tournament but the Swedes showed they should not be under-estimated with their swift counter-attacking style.

Women's World Cup; Sweden, Hedvig Lindahl

Germany began brightly and took the lead in the 16th minute through Lina Magull, who twisted her body perfectly to beat Hedvig Lindahl with a hooked volley.

Germany had not conceded a single goal in the tournament but their defence surprisingly failed to deal with a long ball down the middle from Linda Sembrant which Jakobsson latched onto and slotted home past goalkeeper Almuth Schult.

At the break, Germany coach Martina Voss-Tecklenburg threw on midfielder Dzsenifer Marozsan, who had not played since breaking a toe in their tournament opener against China, looking to add some much-needed creativity.

Instead, just three minutes after the resumption, it was the Swedes who struck again.

Schult did well to turn away a powerful header by Fridolina Rolfo but the rebound fell kindly to striker Blackstenius, who fired home from point blank range for her second goal in as many matches.

Substitute Lena Oberdorf missed a great chance to force the game into extra time when she headed wide with the goal gaping in the 80th minute but Sweden held their nerve to reach their fourth World Cup semi-finals.

“We looked at Germany and knew there would be a bit more space behind their backline to exploit with Blackstenius and Jakobsson. It worked well, sprinting past the defensive line,” said Sweden coach Peter Gerhardsson.

“We’ve talked about the possibilities here to go far and win every game. A good sign is that we’re now qualified for the Olympics, which was hanging over our heads for a while. Now we don’t have to worry about it. There’s not a single cell in us that’s content with this. We’re going to go for it.”

There were tears on the faces of many of the Germany squad as the reality of their exit — and Olympic absence – hit home hard.

“We wanted to do so much more. This should not happen like it did,” said Magull.

“We had one, two good chances to equalise but did not manage it. That’s a real shame. We knew they had fast players and wanted to defend high up the pitch,” she said.

“That brings the danger of conceding on the counter, which had happened before the break.”

The win was Sweden’s first over Germany at a major tournament since 1995, having previously come close in the 2003 World Cup final and in the 2016 Rio final.

Sweden’s semi-final opponents were confirmed earlier in the day when Netherlands defeated Italy 2-0 in Valenciennes, courtesy of second-half headers from Vivianne Miedema and Stefanie van der Gragt.

Netherlands, Sweden, along with Britain — after England reached the last four on Thursday — have qualified for the 2020 Olympics as the top three European teams at the World Cup.

Man behind attacks on women held

Kathmandu, June 28

Police have arrested the prime suspect in a series of attacks on women with a pointed metal object after two weeks of massive manhunt.

A special team of Teku-based Metropolitan Police Range took Santosh Karki, 30, into custody last night from Maharajgunj where he used to run a restaurant. Karki, who hails from Ramechhap district, had been residing in Naikap. He also worked in Saudi Arabia for five years before returning home in 2017.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Hobindra Bogati, MPR spokesperson, said the motorcycle-borne suspect used to target women walking alone in the evening or at night while returning to his rented room from the restaurant.

Karki used to puncture arms or backs of women who came in his way and fleethe scene without giving victims any time to note his bike’s registration number. Most of the victims are from Dallu, Tankeshwor and Sorhakhutte areas.

According to police, Karki has confessed to attacking the women with a ‘nail’.

Police have impounded the motorcycle that Karki rode while attacking women. However, police have yet to retrieve the ‘sharp metal object’ that Karki used to attack women.

In a statement recorded at MPR, Karki said he pricked women with the ‘sharp metal object’ only for his self-satisfaction and did not have any intention to transmit any disease. Karki told police that he had targeted six women.

“We are investigating whether he had any intention of transmitting disease to victims,” DSP Bogati told THT. He said Karki had operated without any accomplice.

The first incident of the attack was reported in Swoyambhu in mid-April. At least eight women have been pricked with the ‘pointed metal object’ since then. Police had registered five complaints since June 20.

According to Sukraraj Tropical and Infectious Disease Hospital, as many as eight women visited the health facility for counselling and treatment on suspicion of being infected with HIV and hepatitis through the prick wound. It stated that their health was normal.

DSP Bogati said police had launched a manhunt to nab the suspect on the basis of a CCTV footage of a woman attacked by a rider at night while she was taking her dog for a walk in Dallu. Kathmandu District has remanded Karki to five-day judicial custody for further investigation into the charge under Section 104 of the Criminal Code Act that prohibits any offence that will or may transmit any infectious disease to others.

The guilty in such cases are liable for punishment with imprisonment up to 10 years and a fine not exceeding Rs 100,000.

SC notice to govt on pork barrel fund

  • Govt gets 7 days to show cause why it allocated funds to MPs to spend in their constituencies

Kathmandu, June 28

The Supreme Court today issued show cause notice to the government for allocating fund under Local Infrastructure Development Partnership Programme for lawmakers elected under first-past-the-post electoral system. This fund is also known as pork barrel fund.

Constitution bench of the court comprising Chief Justice Cholendra Shamsher JB Rana, justices Deepak Kumar Karki, Kedar Prasad Chalise, Meera Khadka and Hari Krishna Karki issued the notice to defendants in response to two writ petitions filed on June 2, by Advocate Paras Mani Bhattarai, a resident of Babarmahal, Kathmandu, and Dinesh Raj Subedi, a social activist from Ramechhap district.

The petitioners have demanded annulment of Local Infrastructure Development Partnership Programme of the new fiscal budget introduced in the Parliament on May 29.

Advocate Bhattarai told THT that the SC directed defendants to show cause within seven days. “I had sought interim order against the pork barrel fund allocation and court’s order to summon amicus curiae, as this case involves interpretation of the major articles of the constitution. The court, however, did not agree with the argument,” Bhattarai said. He added that he would continue to request the court to summon amicus curiae from Nepal Bar Association, as it was an extremely important case in terms of the interpretation of the constitution.

Under this programme, the government has proposed to increase infrastructure development expenditure amount from Rs 40 million to Rs 60 million from the new fiscal that each lawmaker elected under the first-past-the-post electoral system will be able to spend in his/her electoral districts.

Bhattarai and Subedi argued that the new federal constitution had provisioned for three types of government – federal, provincial and local – that were autonomous and independent. They added that the budgetary proposal to allow FPTP lawmakers to spend Rs 60 million in their electoral districts violated constitutional provisions, as lawmakers would be interfering in the work of local levels, which had absolute authority to carry out infrastructure development projects within their jurisdiction.

Bhattarai argued in his petitions that allocation of pork barrel fund was not only illegal, but also against the principle of federalism.

“The government should not allow lawmakers to spend money in their constituencies. Lawmakers only have powers to enact laws, formulate policies, conduct parliamentary hearings and impeach erring public officials,” Bhattarai said in his writ petition.

His petition adds that allowing lawmakers to spend government money in their constituencies will let them interfere with the local government’s work, besides bleeding government coffers.

Petitioners have named the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers, Ministry of Finance, House of Representatives, National Assembly, Parliament Secretariat, speaker and chairman of the National Assembly as defendants.

NRB seeks commitment from commercial banks for mergers and acquisitions

Kathmandu, June 27

Nepal Rastra Bank today summoned chairpersons and chief executive officers of all 28 commercial banks in operation to discuss possible mergers and acquisitions in the future.

During the meeting, NRB told bankers to submit names of banks that they wanted to merge with or submit a commitment letter for merger to NRB before the Monetary Policy is announced in mid-July.

As per the announcement of the budget for fiscal 2019-20, NRB has urged banks to submit written commitments that they are ready for M&A, said Laxmi Prapanna Niroula, spokesperson for the central bank. “The banks that have already found partners for M&A should submit their confirmation with the partner’s name and those seeking partners can submit their commitment,” he said.

He added that the discussion was held also to collect recommendations for the Monetary Policy. “The upcoming Monetary Policy will aim to encourage banks and financial institutions to go for M&A,” he said, adding, “As this will help create good governance in the banking sector of the country, the meeting today aimed to discuss the same with stakeholders.”

Meanwhile, in order to encourage BFIs to opt for M&A, the government has also announced that such banks will be granted tax exemption for one year, he added. “M&A among BFIs will contribute to safety and soundness in the banking sector,” Niroula said, adding, “We are just conveying a message that the government is positive towards reducing the number of BFIs to ensure the quality of service.”

According to him, the push for M&A is not ignoring the open market policy, rather it is for the survival and sustainability of the BFIs.

Bhuvan Dahal, CEO of Sanima Bank, said commercial banks were positive towards NRB’s decision, but the time limit given by the central bank for the M&A was not enough. “Choosing a partner for business is a matter of taking risk. So, it will be difficult for us to complete the whole process of M&A by the time the Monetary Policy is announced,” he said.

Dahal said the number of BFIs in the country was comparatively high when taking the market size into account. “The number should be reduced, but how to do so needs to be thought through,” he said. “The NRB responded positively to our request for more time.”

Ashok SJB Rana, CEO of Himalayan Bank, said bankers were obliged to follow the government’s decision.

Prior to this, NRB had asked banks to raise their paid-up capital to Rs 8 billion from Rs 2 billion to encourage consolidation in the banking sector. However, only a few BFIs did so forcing the central bank to come up with the M&A policy for big banks.

Case of mistaken identity

KATHMANDU: Penpa Tsering, the person who is on China’s ‘most wanted’ list, has been in Dharamshala, India, for the past few weeks for the on-going defamation case he has filed against the Central Tibetan Administration President Lobsang Sangay and his Cabinet, according to the Tibet Sun.

Reacting to THT report, Tsering, who is the Dalai Lama’s former representative, told Tibet Sun,  “It clearly shows that the Chinese government’s pressure on Nepal is working.”

The Tibetan Supreme Justice Commission has scheduled the next hearing for closing arguments in the case for June 27. Tsering filed the case in the Tibetan apex court in May 2018. Tsering said he was aware of a Tibetan with the same name who had faced a similar problem in the past at TIA in 2013, but was not deported, the report quoted Tsering as saying.

“I was in Nepal for a political workshop in 2007 when I was a member of the Tibetan Parliament-in-exile. Then the authorities didn’t stop me. It’s probably after I became the speaker of the Tibetan Parliament-in-exile that the Chinese blacklisted me.”

He was speaker of the Tibetan Parliament-in-exile from 2008 to 2010 for the 14th Parliament, and again from 2011 to 2016 for the 15th Parliament.

He told the Tibet Sun that he had no passport and travelled on the travel document issued by the Government of India.

American embassy seeks clarification

Kathmandu, June 27

The Embassy of the United States in Kathmandu has sought clarification from the government regarding Saturday’s deportation of a Nepal-born US citizen on suspicion of being an agent of exiled Tibetan leader the Dalai Lama.

The US embassy was troubled that the Nepal government deported a US citizen at the request of a foreign government and asked whether a US citizen entering Nepal needed clearance from foreign governments. “We are seeking clarification from the Nepal government about the facts of this specific instance and, more generally, on whether US citizens seeking to enter Nepal will be subject to clearance from other foreign governments,” said US Embassy Spokesperson Andie De Arment in an e-mailed statement. The embassy’s reaction comes two days after THT broke the story.

Penpa Tsering, 53, who arrived at Tribhuvan International Airport from New York City via New Delhi on Saturday, was denied entry into Nepal and was deported to the US after hours of questioning at the airport.

Penpa, born on 1 July 1965, was sent back to the US after immigration officials found out that in their records a man by the same name was on China’s ‘most-wanted’ list. The Chinese Embassy had written to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to restrict a person named Penpa Tsering from entering Nepal, labelling him a campaigner of the free Tibet movement, as well as a strong advocate of Tibet’s exiled spiritual leader.

The deported person’s connection to free-Tibet movement could not be independently verified. Nepal-born Tsering had acquired a US passport on 18 June 2012. He’s learnt to have visited Nepal earlier.

Officials concerned at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs were not available for comments.

Observers said it was a mistake on the part of Nepali authorities and that they should be careful while taking such decisions in the future.

Former foreign secretary Madan Kumar Bhattarai said such cases of ‘mistaken identity’ were not new globally, as authorities concerned try to avoid taking risks. “Nevertheless, the government should acknowledge the mistake,” he said. Bhattarai said Nepal should be careful and not take arbitrary decisions as a sizeable number of tourists from the US visited Nepal.

Nearly 200 Kailash Mansarovar pilgrims stuck in Humla

Kathmandu, June 26

Nearly 200 Indians on their way back home from the Kailash Mansarovar pilgrimage in Tibet are stuck in Nepal’s Humla district due to alleged mismanagement by private tour operators, pilgrims claimed today.

Every year, hundreds of Indians undertake the ‘yatra’ which involves trekking under inhospitable conditions. Holding significance for Hindus as the abode of Lord Shiva, it holds religious importance also for the Jains and the Buddhists.

The pilgrims are currently stuck in Hilsa town, near the Nepal-China border, where they reached from Burang in Tibet and were to immediately leave for Simikot by helicopter and then onwards to Nepalgunj, they said.

“When we reached here (Hilsa), we had to overstay because several people who had come here prior to us were made to overstay by the tour operators. They have been here for three days; they are getting to leave now and we will follow after that,” Pankaj Bhatnagar, 40, said.

Bhatnagar, who hails from Derabassi in Punjab, said the facilities were inadequate to accommodate the number of pilgrims in Hilsa and intermittent rain was only compounding their troubles.

There are groups of people whose tour is being managed by different private operators who have outsourced the work locally, said Mayank Agarwal, 28, a pilgrim from Gurgaon in Haryana.

“There is no regulation in the number of people arriving here. The number of pilgrims being brought here is just increasing. The facilities are not even bare minimum. The tour operators are not responding,” Agarwal, who accompanied his parents on the pilgrimage, told PTI over phone. Tour operators in India, however, said that the overstay of some pilgrims was caused as helicopter operations between Hilsa and Simikot had to be halted in view of bad weather.

“The flight operations there are totally dependent on weather. Now, with weather conditions improving, pilgrims are being sent to Simikot. However, those who arrived in Hilsa first will get to depart first, except in cases of medical emergency and elderly people, who get preference. The movement is on and there is no problem,” Yatish Kumar of Noida-based Global Connect Hospitality said.

CIAA summons 86 individuals to record statements

Kathmandu, June 26

The Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority today issued a notice in Gorkhapatra daily summoning 86 individuals to record statements in Lalita Niwas land grab case.

A probe team led by former government Secretary Sharada Prasad Trital had recently submitted its report to the government in December, claiming that individuals had illegally grabbed 299 ropani land in Baluwatar.

The report also accused the family of late Nepali Congress leader Subarna Shamsher Rana of grabbing government land, a charge members of the Rana family have denied.  The Trital-led team has also said that members of Subarna Shamsher Rana’s family had reclaimed even those land plots that had been legally acquired by the Panchayat government in the 1960s.

Post 1990 democratic era, the Rana family was allowed to reclaim their land that had been forfeited by the Panchayat government for their involvement in the movement for democracy. The Trital-led panel’s probe report indicates that Land Revenue Office, Dillibazar, colluded with them to return even those land plots that had been acquired legally by paying compensation to Rana’s family.

The CIAA has issued the notice as per Section 43 of Prevention of Corruption Act, asking 86 individuals to appear before it within seven days to answer some queries related to complaints that employees of Land Revenue Office, Dillibazar, colluded with individuals to fraudulently transfer the ownership of government land to individuals and to establish individuals’ tenancy rights on government land.

CIAA Spokesperson Pradeep Kumar Koirala said some names repeatedly appeared in the list of 86 persons mainly because the CIAA issued notice on the basis of land plot numbers and those persons held multiple land plots.

Koirala said CIAA published notice only for those people who could not be contacted by the anti-graft body for any reasons.  When asked why the CIAA did not issue notice to other high-profile personalities, including Nepal Communist Party (NCP) General Secretary Bishnu Paudel, Koirala said, “I cannot give you details of persons who have been probed by the CIAA, but the CIAA publishes notice only for those people it cannot contact during the investigation.”

The Trital-led panel, which termed transfer of ownership of land plots in Baluwatar to members of late Rukma Shamsher Rana’s family and his relatives illegal, recommended action against government employees involved in those transfers.

The Trital-led committee recommended probe of the roles of erstwhile chief of LRO, Dillibazar Kaladhar Deuja and other responsible staffers who were suspected of fraudulently transferring ownership of government land to individuals.

The report states that some employees who signed the document did not mention their names and some employees’ short signatures did not match the signatures put on the attendance book.

The Trital report adds that the CIAA should prosecute LRO, Dillibazar, officers Tikaram Ghimire and Hupendra Mani KC, survey officers Mohammed Sabir Hussein and Shrihari Pudasaini and second class non-gazetted officer Shyam Kumar Chhetri for allowing registration of omitted land in the name of individuals, which constituted abuse of power.

The panel also recommended action against former chiefs of Samarjung Company Arjun Prasad Bhandari, Chiranjivi Adhikari, Lokhari Ghimire and Ramesh Kumar Pokharel for failing to protect public land or update record of information and concealed facts in order to assist the land mafia.

Action was also recommended against  Shobha Kant Dhakal and Ram Kumar Subedi who allegedly influenced LRO, Dillibazar, employees to register land belonging to the government, public and guthi in the name of their family members and other individuals.

Azam century leads Pakistan to victory over New Zealand

  • Pakistan beat New Zealand by six wickets
  • Jimmy Neesham top-scores with 97 not out for NZ
  • Babar Azam makes 101 not out to guide Pakistan to victory
  • Pakistan one point behind England in standings (Adds details, quotes)

BIRMINGHAM: Babar Azam’s patient unbeaten century guided Pakistan to a six-wicket victory over New Zealand on Wednesday and revived their hopes of reaching the Cricket World Cup semi-finals.

Cricket World Cup, Pakistan, Babar Azam

New Zealand, unbeaten in their first six games of the tournament, remained second in the standings behind Australia and should still make the last four comfortably while Pakistan are now only one point behind hosts England.

“Whenever we are in a corner we play our best, it was a great team effort,” Pakistan captain Sarfaraz Ahmed said.

“All the bowlers bowled well and there was some of the finest batting I have ever seen. Babar played one of the best innings I have ever seen. They handled the pressure so well.”

The match was delayed by overnight rain and New Zealand collapsed to 46-4 after deciding to bat.

Captain Kane Williamson steadied the ship with a gritty 41 before Jimmy Neesham and Colin de Grandhomme shared a sixth-wicket partnership of 132 which lifted the Black Caps to a respectable total.

Neesham struck three sixes and five fours in his unbeaten 97 and De Grandhomme made 64.

Pakistan opener Fakhar Zaman fell cheaply to Trent Boult and Imam-ul-Haq was brilliantly caught by a diving Martin Guptill off Lockie Ferguson for 19 but Azam and Mohammad Hafeez steered Pakistan to 110-2.

Hafeez departed for 32 but Haris Sohail joined Azam and the pair calmly added 126 to take their side to the brink of victory before Sohail was run out by Guptill for 68.

Azam held his nerve, however, and guided Pakistan to their target with five balls to spare.

The 1992 world champions play Afghanistan and Bangladesh in their last two group games and will be confident of making the last four while England will be sweating as they prepare for difficult matches against India and New Zealand.

“We are not thinking about 1992, we are going match by match,” Sarfaraz said.

Williamson was not too despondent after his team’s first loss of the tournament.

“The surfaces in the last three games have been difficult and we were outplayed on a tough surface by a strong side,” he said.

“We were right in it but their batsmen played beautifully well and took the game away from us. There are so many games in the round robin you can’t win them all.”
