Birgunj, January 31
Local residents of Shreesiya Khalwatol of Parsa submitted a memorandum to the district administration office today demanding that the government provide compensation and rehabilitate them elsewhere before appropriating their land for the proposed construction of dry port and integrated check post.
Some 500 people, including Province 2 lawmaker Ramesh Patel and Nepali Congress Parsa President Ajaya Dwibedi had reached the administration office to submit the memorandum.
The locals expressed worry over the government’s preparation to fix compensation for their land without consulting them, and said there was no way they could afford to purchase land elsewhere in the vicinity given the huge surge in land price in view of the start of the construction of national pride projects. They have also demanded that they be resettled in their own ward, besides providing compensation for their land.
The government is preparing to appropriate 62 bigaha land belonging to 297 land owners for construction of the projects. On his part, CDO Narayan Prasad Bhattarai, upon receiving the memorandum, said the compensation would be fixed after consultation with locals. “We can’t do anything in cases that don’t fall under our remit; otherwise we are committed to listen to the locals before or while starting projects,” he said.
