Government withdraws Odd-Even rule

KATHMANDU: The odd-even rule that came into effect yesterday in a bid to ease VIP-VVIP movement during Asia Pacific Summit being held here, has been withdrawn today.

 

The system of vehicle operation based on their number plates will be lifted from 11:30 am today, said authorities.

According to a notice issued by Metropolitan Traffic Police Division, the Home Ministry issued a directive to lift the temporary restriction on vehicles’ movement based on the last two digits of their number plates.

Government received criticisms from all quarters with a section of public defying the temporary rule following imposition of the system yesterday.

Leaders from opposition parties too had expressed dissatisfaction over the government’s unwarranted decision to restrict movement of vehicles. Nepali Congress youth leader Gagan Thapa, Naya Shakti Parti co-ordinator Baburam Bhattarai, Rastriya Prajatantra Party chair Kamal Thapa, among others had criticised the government for re-introducing the rule.

NC leader Gagan Thapa further called for a civil-disobedience of the rule stating the public is suffering for an unjust cause.

The plan was supposed to last through November 29 till December 3.
