Dahal takes potshot at fellow Co-chair Oli

KATHMANDU, AUGUST 1

Co-chair of the ruling Nepal Communist Party (NCP) Pushpa Kamal Dahal took a potshot at fellow Co-chair of the party and Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli for delaying the debate in the party, particularly in the Standing Committee.

Addressing a public programme here today, Dahal said he was fully aware that deliberations on several issues related to the party should not be halted in the name of party unity. Dahal’s remarks were aimed at PM Oli, who has been avoiding the Standing Committee meeting in recent weeks.

We have fought against the tendency to entice leaders with assurances of party positions in order to disrupt unity between communist forces.

We are careful about not doing anything that could create instability, but the ongoing debate within the party is not aimed at gaining party positions, Dahal said.

Stating that a communist party should run its activities as per the party rules, Dahal said they were facing challenge in upholding the rule of law within the party and ensuring that everybody followed party rules. These remarks were also aimed at PM Oli because Dahal and other leaders close to him have alleged that PM Oli has been taking unilateral decisions ignoring party rules and decisions.

Dahal also said that the debate within the party would further cement party unity.

“We all should work together to defeat any attempt to split the party,” Dahal added.

The last time PM Oli unilaterally postponed the Standing Committee meeting, he incurred the wrath of the rival faction led by Dahal and senior leader Madhav Kumar Nepal, who said that the PM had violated the party statute and established rules by unilaterally calling off the Standing Committee meeting on July 28.

Dahal and Oli, who used to hold dialogue almost everyday before July 28, have not held any meeting since then.

NCP Standing Committee member Mani Thapa, who was once close to Dahal, has switched side. He said PM Oli had clearly stated that he would not quit any post just because the Standing Committee or Central Committee wanted him to, but if he had to quit the party post, then the next general convention would have to be held to elect a new leadership.

Thapa said Dahal had forged an alliance with Madhav Kumar Nepal and Jhalanath Khanal and that’s why he was not able to take independent decisions to ease the impasse. “I personally believe that only the party’s General Convention can ease the current deadlock in the party, he added.

Dahal’s personal aide Bishnu Sapkota said both Dahal and Oli had been sticking to their guns.

Deputy Parliamentary Party Leader of the ruling NCP Suabas Chandra Nembang said if Oli and Dahal, who were signatories to the unity deal, agreed to any deal, then that would be a different story.

Otherwise, party leaders should not seek to remove Oli either as the party co-chair or prime minister. “It’s the party’s General Convention that elects a new leadership, so if anybody wants to be the party’s new chairperson, then that person should wait till the next GC,” Nembang said and added that seeking to remove Oli from the prime minister’s position would be against the spirit of the constitution that had incorporated safeguards against political instability.

NCP leader Nepal has warned both co-chairs that party affairs should be decided collectively by party leaders and not just by the two cochairs.

He said PM Oli and Dahal were likely to hold a dialogue tomorrow morning.

Standing Committee member Devendra Paudel said that while agreement between the two co-chairs would be crucial to end the current impasse in the party, the consent of other senior leaders of the party and the collective ownership of members of the Standing Committee would also be necessary to end the deadlock.

NC prez expresses solidarity, asks lih to end hunger strike

KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba on Saturday went to Basantapur world heritage site where the ‘Enough is Enough’ activist lih has been staging a fast-unto- death for the last 16 days.

Deuba expressed solidarity with the campaigners’ agenda.

The former prime minister, however, also stressed the need to save the lives of youths and urged lih to end the hunger strike. “We are with you in the fight, but this method could be perilous for protesters. Thus, it is wise to end the hunger strike for now. You can also adopt other forms of protest where our party will fully support the cause,”
Deuba told lih.

He also said the government should be sincere about saving the lives of all Nepali citizens by implementing the agreement reached with youth activists during the previous hunger strike.

Police arrest dozens of protesters

  • lih’s hunger strike enters 17th day
  • Deuba expresses support for activists’ agenda

Kathmandu, August 1

In yet another operation of the riot police, more than 35 youth activists representing ‘Enough is Enough’ campaign were arrested, even before they could stage a protest outside Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli’s official residence in Baluwatar.

The youths were arrested and jailed the whole day even before they could gather around or display placards.
The youths were planning to stage a peaceful protest in support of activist Iih, 26, who has been on a fast-unto death for the last 16 days.

This is the second time activist Iih has been on hunger strike demanding implementation of the 12-point agreement reached between him and the government on July 7.

While Iih’s hunger strike is being prolonged indefinitely, the government is turning a deaf ear to the hundreds of supporters who have come forward to express solidarity with him.

Hundreds of youths who had come to join the protest were arrested outside various restaurants, supermarkets and while they were heading towards the protest site. Only a handful of youths who managed to trick the authorities and reach Baluwatar area were able to shout slogans or display placards, that too for a short span of time.

The arrested were kept at Metropolitan Police Circle, Maligaun.

Agrima KC, the campaign coordinator, said, “Some high ranking police officers had told us yesterday that they would not use force or disperse the protest set for today.

We were thus ready to organise the protest in a peaceful manner. But, they did not even let us gather around the protest site.”

The youths had also staged protest yesterday. They were also detained and released late in the evening.

The government, in the 12-point agreement, had agreed to scrap the rapid diagnostic test, increase PCR test and release people from quarantine only after ensuring they had not contracted the virus through PCR testing. The government had also agreed to increase PCR test of medical health professionals and implement the agreement by drafting new rules.

The youths say the government has shown no interest in implementing the agreement.

“We all want the government to act promptly to save lives. Or, the government will have to answer for the death of hundreds more people in the coming days if it does not improve its methods,” activist lih said during a brief telephonic conversation with THT.

Meanwhile, lih’s health condition is deteriorating with each passing day. He has not been able to speak to people properly and has difficulty sitting.

Laxmi Pariyar, a health assistant taking care of lih said fluctuations were observed in his vital signs, which was not a good sign. “lih could become unconscious anytime because of lack of solid food,” Pariyar said. lih is currently surviving on saline water.

Aubameyang double helps Arsenal beat Chelsea for 14th FA Cup trophy

Arsenal skipper Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored twice to help his side secure a 2-1 win over 10-man Chelsea in the FA Cup final on Saturday for a record-extending 14th crown in the competition – and a spot in next season’s Europa League.

Victory at an empty Wembley Stadium earned Mikel Arteta his first trophy as Arsenal manager, after he left his role as Pep Guardiola’s assistant at Manchester City to replace Unai Emery in December.

With the contest locked at 1-1, Gunners striker Aubameyang danced past the opposition defenders before finishing with his left foot in the 67th minute to ensure that Arsenal salvage European action from a difficult domestic season after finishing eighth in the Premier League.

Chelsea had struck in the fifth minute when Christian Pulisic collected Olivier Giroud’s fine flick-on inside the penalty area and tucked the ball past goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez from close range.

Arsenal drew level from the penalty spot through Aubameyang in the 28th minute after Chelsea skipper Cesar Azpilicueta was booked for bringing down the Gabonese moments earlier.

Chelsea, who were forced to take off Azpilicueta and Pulisic due to serious-looking injuries, were reduced to 10 men after going 2-1 down when Mateo Kovacic collected his second yellow card of the game for a very soft foul on Granit Xhaka.
